Göttingen - A University City of Great Tradition
The university city of Göttingen (population 130,000) in the south of Lower Saxony was first mentioned in documents in 953, granted a city charter in 1210 and as a member of the Hansa flourished greatly. Even today, the Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall) in the heart of the old town, the market fountain with the Gänseliesel statue, the "most-kissed girl in the world", and splendid churches and half-timbered houses still create a medieval aura. Göttingen University, the Georg-August-Universität, founded in 1734 and alma mater to over 42 Nobel Prize laureates, today has about 24,000 students.
The city is also home to numerous research establishments and internationally operating companies. Visitors to Göttingen enjoy the city's rich cultural and educational life, excellent transport links and the cosmopolitan atmosphere where many students and international guests characterize the cityscape.
